Custom Domain

Every BrickFTP site gets a custom subdomain that looks something like this:

<your-subdomain>.brickftp.com

Customers can take their site customization a step further — removing all traces of BrickFTP branding — by setting up a completely custom domain. Something like:

files.<your-domain>.com

BrickFTP makes the process of setting up a custom domain easy. Note that you will need both administrator access to your BrickFTP site, as well as access to your account with the DNS provider for your domain (e.g. GoDaddy, NameCheap, Route 53, etc.)

Choose your custom domain

You can use any subdomain of any domain that you control. We recommend not using ftp as the first part of your domain (such as ftp.<your-domain>.com), since this will cause some browsers to improperly access the BrickFTP web interface.

Instead, we suggest using something like files.<your-domain>.com.

Set up a CNAME record

The first step after choosing your custom domain is to set up a CNAME DNS record with your DNS provider, pointing your chosen custom domain to your BrickFTP subdomain.

For example, if you’re using a certificate provided by BrickFTP, add a CNAME record pointing files.<your-domain>.com to <your-subdomain>.brickftp.com.

If you’re using your own certificate (not provided by BrickFTP), you will instead need to point to the address found by navigating to Settings > Security > Manage SSL Certificates. For example, you may add a CNAME record pointing files.<your-domain>.com to s-<your-subdomain>.di.app.brickftp.com.

Add your custom domain in BrickFTP

Next, you’ll need to log in to your BrickFTP site as an administrator, and add your custom domain at Settings > General > Custom Domain.

SSL certificate and dedicated IP addresses

In order to secure all connections to your custom domain with SSL encryption, BrickFTP will automatically obtain an SSL certificate for your custom domain, and provision two dedicated IP addresses that are exclusive to your site. We will handle the certificate renewals, keeping your certificate current.

If you prefer not to use the BrickFTP-provided certificate, you are free replace it with your own certificate at any time at Settings > Security > Manage SSL Certificates. This is also where you can view your dedicated IP addresses.

Custom domain and SSL certificate changes typically take effect within minutes, though in rare cases these may take up to 48 hours. You and your users can continue to access your site at your custom subdomain in the meantime without interruption.
